Satapirkan Sähkö to implement a Landis+Gyr smart metering solution for 70 000 meter points

October 2008 – Finnish utility Satapirkan Sähkö has invested EUR 10 million in a Landis+Gyr Automatic Metering Management (AMM) solution to remotely read and control 70 000 meter points. The interoperable solution will include meters supplied by two different manufacturers.

Satapirkan Sähkö has made the decision to invest on an AMM solution, which consists of a Landis+Gyr AMM system and 40,000 meters. The remaining meters are supplied by another manufacturer. The interoperable structure of the AMM solution enables the use of multiple suppliers within one project. Landis+Gyr has tailored the solution to meet the specific demands of Satapirkan Sähkö, enabling the utility to read third party meters and process the received information.

Satapirkan Sähkö consists of nine different partner companies, out of which eight will be connected to the new AMM solution.  Part of the solution is AIM Dashboard, a Web-based application, offering customer service personnel quick and easy online access to the device information. The AMM solution also provides real time metering information which can be directly integrated with the electricity utility’s own Customer Information System. This enables billing based on actual consumption, substantially speeding up the whole billing process.

Landis+Gyr’s AMM-solution was best suited to meet Satapirkan Sähkö’s specific demands due to its interoperability and flexibility. One of the requirements set for the AMM – solution was the upcoming renewal of Satapirkan Sähkö’s Customer Information System. For this challenge AMM’s AIMIA Integration solution offered the best resolution. AIMIA is a flexible integration solution that offers data exchange services for various integration needs. It enables seamless and reliable data flow between various systems, such as Customer Information System.

Meters supplied by Landis+Gyr contain a built in multi energy function. In addition to collecting data from the electricity meters, they can be used to collect metering data from other sources such as gas, water or heat meters.  Data transfer to the AMM system is carried out using GPRS and PLC connections in the urban areas and with GPRS connection in the rural areas. Meters are also equipped with a radio transmitter enabling the utility to share metering information with personal energy management devices in the future. For this purpose Landis+Gyr is in the process of developing an end customer application.

Installation work will commence in the fall 2008 and will be completed during 2012.
